Baton Rouge is about an hour drive from the River House. The Capitol city of Louisiana, Baton Rouge is home to LSU, several museums, and tons of fun entertainment. Here are a few of our favorites!
LSU Rural Life Museum
The LSU Rural Life Museum is one of our favorite attractions in Baton Rouge. Step back in time as you tour homes, churches, and general stores. Walk around the beautiful gardens and imagine what rural Louisiana must have been like all those years ago!
Louisiana Art and Science Museum
The Louisiana Art and Science Museum is located in downtown Baton Rouge and offers a planetarium, a children’s play and learning area, and even a legit real mummy. Not only is this an amazing and educational museum, free admission, which includes unlimited planetarium shows, is available every first Sunday of the month! This is a must-see if you are in the Baton Rouge area.
USS Kidd Veterans Museum
The USS Kidd Museum tells the story of the WWII ship. You can visit the museum area and take a self guided walking tour through the ship itself. The USS Kidd is located in downtown Baton Rouge, near the Louisiana Art and Science Museum. While in the museum, look for a memorial for David Gabel, our cousin who gave his life for our freedom in Afghanistan in 2007.
Bluebonnet Swamp
The Bluebonnet Swamp gives patrons a chance to see Louisiana wildlife up close in the nature center. Right in the center of Baton Rouge, this short hike through the swamp is a reminder of what the city must have been like many years ago.
Knock Knock Children's Museum
The Knock Knock Museum is a go-to for us on rainy days. With three floors of fun, this museum features a climbing space, a mini grocery store, a mini vet clinic, and so much more.
Mike the Tiger at LSU
Mike the Tiger’s habitat is located on LSU’s campus, which is right next door to the Knock Knock Museum. If you pay him a visit, be sure you are aware of the LSU Football Game schedule and plan accordingly! Parking can sometimes be challenging due to the number of people on campus and the pedestrian only areas that are enforced on week days. You may want to bring a wagon for small children and be prepared to possibly do some walking. That being said, Mike is a fun-loving Tiger and a joy to watch! You may also want to check on his Facebook page to be sure he isn’t being kept indoors for any reason.
